What is an LED face mask?
An LED face mask is a home phototherapy device that emits different wavelengths of light to stimulate the skin's natural regeneration processes. Originally developed for dermatology and space medicine, this technology is now accessible at home.
Unlike a simple lamp, a quality LED mask emits precise wavelengths — measured in nanometres (nm) — that penetrate to specific depths in the skin to trigger targeted biological responses.
Wavelengths and their effects
Each LED colour corresponds to a wavelength and acts differently:
- Red (630–660 nm) — Stimulates collagen and elastin production. Reduces fine lines, refines skin texture, improves radiance. The most studied wavelength for skin rejuvenation.
- Near-infrared (830–850 nm) — Penetrates deeper than red. Promotes cellular repair, reduces inflammation, improves firmness. Invisible to the eye but highly effective.
- Blue (415–430 nm) — Destroys the P. acnes bacteria responsible for breakouts. Ideal for blemish-prone skin without drying it out.
- Yellow (570–590 nm) — Stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation. Reduces redness and improves dull complexion.
The Elyra LED Photon Mask combines red and infrared wavelengths for an overall anti-aging effect, with the option to activate blue mode for combination or acne-prone skin.
How to use an LED mask: step-by-step protocol
For optimal results, follow this simple protocol:
- Step 1 — Cleanse: Always start on clean, dry skin. Makeup and SPF can block light penetration.
- Step 2 — Serum (optional): Apply a hyaluronic acid or vitamin C serum. The gentle warmth of the mask helps actives penetrate deeper.
- Step 3 — LED session: Position the mask comfortably. Set to the desired wavelength. Recommended duration: 15–20 minutes.
- Step 4 — Moisturise: Finish with a hydrating cream. Skin is more receptive to actives after an LED session.
How often should you use the mask?
Clinical studies show that consistency is key. For visible results:
- Induction phase (weeks 1–4): 5 sessions per week, 15–20 minutes.
- Maintenance phase (month 2 onwards): 2–3 sessions per week.
Most users notice improved radiance after 2 weeks, and a visible reduction in fine lines after 4–6 weeks of regular use.
Who can use an LED mask?
LED masks suit most skin types: dry, combination, mature, and sensitive. There are no known side effects for the vast majority of users.
However, LED masks are not recommended if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding (as a precaution)
- Have photosensitive epilepsy
- Are taking photosensitising medications (certain antibiotics, topical retinoids)
- Have active skin cancer in the treated area
When in doubt, consult a dermatologist before starting.
How long until you see results?
Results vary by skin type and regularity of use. In general:
- 2 weeks: More radiant complexion, better-hydrated skin
- 4 weeks: Reduction in fine lines, refined texture
- 8 weeks: Improved firmness, lasting results
Phototherapy is not an instant fix — it's a long-term beauty investment, like exercise for the body.
